Situated just off Mission Beach and 2 hours south of Cairns, the iconic Dunk Island is undergoing a staged redevelopment, beginning with the launch of a new restaurant and bar, along with refreshed day-use areas. Known for its lush rainforest, secluded beaches and fantastic snorkelling, the team has breathed new life into the island, with future plans to reopen the full resort in later stages.
After being damaged and closed since Cyclone Yasi, the resort is being brought back to life in carefully planned stages. Jason, the General Manager, approached Reward Hospitality for support with styling, venue finalisation, and preparation for going to market with the new restaurant and bar. He visited our Cairns showroom, spending several hours exploring different combinations of crockery and glassware to bring the resort’s dining vision to life.In addition to styling support, our team helped select the right mix of equipment to support the island’s evolving needs, including Pro.equip induction cookers, dishwashers, benchtop appliances, and more. With operations rolling out gradually, we’ve continued to supply additional pieces to support their soft openings and launch plans.

Given the island’s unique environmental setting, reducing waste and ensuring sustainable operations was key. Dunk Island became one of the early adopters of the ReadyDose chemical system, a compact, pre-dosed solution that eliminates the need for large, bulky chemical drums. This not only reduces waste and simplifies transport but also removes the logistical burden of getting heavy drums on and off the island. It's a smart, sustainable choice perfectly suited to the needs of remote hospitality venues.
Designing for a vensdue that’s still under construction requires imagination and trust. With the restaurant still being built, styling decisions had to be made without seeing the finished space. Jason worked closely with our team in the Cairns showroom, experimenting with combinations of crockery, cutlery and glassware. Together, we photographed and brainstormed different settings until we landed on a combination that complemented both the island’s natural beauty and the vision for its new dining experience.
This project was built on strong collaboration with both Jason and the on-site builder. With a foundation of existing architectural plans from a previous owner, we worked closely with their team to align equipment recommendations with the site layout and construction progress. The open communication between all parties, despite the challenges of a remote location, ensured a smooth rollout and helped bring their vision to life.
One of the biggest challenges with the Dunk Island project was navigating the logistics of supplying a remote island location. With access limited to ferry transport from Mission Beach, every delivery required careful coordination. Our team managed the process entirely via phone and email, working around construction timelines, weather conditions, and transport limitations. Despite the complexities, we successfully delivered everything from large-scale kitchen equipment to delicate crockery and glassware, on time and in perfect condition.
Reward Hospitality was able to provide Dunk Island Resort with a complete end-to-end solution, supplying everything from front-of-house styling and tableware to back-of-house kitchen equipment, cleaning systems, and consumables. With ongoing support including replenishment items like hand towels, soaps and kitchen supplies, Dunk Island is now set up for success as it gradually reopens to guests. As further stages of the redevelopment unfold, we look forward to continuing our partnership with the team and helping bring the full vision for Dunk Island to life.
